How Many Barcodes Do I Need for My Products?

Quick Answer

You need one unique barcode for every product variant — each unique combination of size, color, and style. A single t-shirt design in 3 sizes and 2 colors needs 6 barcodes. The parent product itself does not need its own code; the individual sellable variants do.

The Golden Rule: One Code Per Variant

Marketplaces treat each variant as a separate sellable item, so each one needs its own unique identifier. The simple test is this: if a customer can choose it as a distinct option and buy it on its own, it needs its own barcode.

This means a ‘product’ in your mind might actually be many products in barcode terms. One t-shirt design is not one barcode — it is one barcode for every size-and-color combination you offer.

How to Count Your Variants

Counting is just multiplication. For each product, multiply the number of options in every category. If you have 4 sizes and 3 colors of one item, that is 4 × 3 = 12 variants, which means 12 barcodes. Do this for each product line and add the totals together.

It is wise to build in a small buffer for variants you plan to add soon, so you are not buying codes again in a few weeks. Buying slightly ahead is cheap insurance.

A Worked Example

Imagine a small shop launching three products. Here is how the barcode count adds up.

Product Sizes Colors Barcodes
T-shirt 3 2 6
Mug 1 4 4
Phone case 1 5 5
Total 15

Do Bundles and Multipacks Need Their Own Codes?

Yes. A bundle or multipack is a distinct sellable item, so it needs its own unique barcode, separate from the codes on the individual items inside it. If you sell a single mug and also a set of four mugs, that is two different products and two different codes (and the case-level set may even use an ITF-14).

Buy the Right Quantity — No More, No Less

Do not overpay for a giant pack you will not use for years, and do not underbuy and have to come back repeatedly. Count your variants, add a small buffer, and pick the package closest to that number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the parent product need a barcode too?

No. Only the individual sellable variants need codes. The parent listing groups them but is not sold on its own.

Can I share one barcode across sizes to save money?

No. Sharing codes across variants breaks inventory tracking and causes marketplace errors. Each variant needs its own.

Should I buy extra barcodes in advance?

A small buffer is smart, since codes are cheap and never expire. Buying a few extra saves you from repeat purchases as you add variants.
