Barcode Rejected on Amazon? Causes & Fixes | GoodUPC

Why Was My Barcode Rejected on Amazon? (And How to Fix It)

A rejected barcode mid-listing is frustrating, but the causes are almost always one of a few predictable issues. Here is how to diagnose and fix the most common ones.

Quick answer: Most barcode rejections come from a duplicate or already-used number, a wrong format/length, or a brand-name mismatch. Using a genuine, unused UPC and matching your brand details to the listing resolves the large majority of cases.

Reason 1: The number is already in use

If a UPC has been assigned to another product, Amazon will reject it as a duplicate. Always use a number that has never been previously assigned.

Buying from a source that guarantees unique, unused numbers prevents this entirely.

Reason 2: Wrong format or invalid check digit

A UPC must be exactly 12 digits with a valid check digit; an EAN is 13. A typo or a missing leading zero will fail validation.

Run the number through a barcode validator before submitting to confirm the check digit is correct.

Reason 3: Brand or category restrictions

Some categories are gated, or require the brand registered to the GTIN to match the listing. If you are not brand-registered, check whether your category needs it.

For non-branded or generic products, make sure the brand field is consistent with how the product is listed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse a barcode from an old product?
No — reusing a number that was assigned to a different product causes duplicate errors. Use a fresh one.

How do I check if my barcode is valid?
Use a free barcode validator to confirm the length and check digit before listing.

Does Amazon require GS1 barcodes?
Most categories accept valid GTINs; certain brand-gated programs may require GS1-registered numbers. Check your specific category.
