How to Generate a Barcode Image (the Right Way)

Having a barcode number is only half the job — you also need a clean, scannable image. Here’s how to generate one correctly.

Quick answer: Generate the barcode in the right symbology (UPC-A for 12 digits, EAN-13 for 13), keep the ‘quiet zone’ margins on each side, and export as a high-resolution PNG or vector. A squashed or low-res image is the top cause of scan failures.

Match the symbology to your number

A 12-digit number is encoded as UPC-A; a 13-digit number as EAN-13. Using the wrong symbology produces an invalid image.

Always verify the encoded number matches your assigned GTIN exactly.

Respect quiet zones and size

Barcodes need blank margins (quiet zones) on the left and right to scan. Don’t crop them tight or place text right against the bars.

Keep enough resolution for print — vector or 300+ DPI PNG avoids blurry, unscannable bars.

Test before you print

Scan the generated image with a phone app to confirm it reads back the correct number.

A quick validation step now saves rejected listings and reprints later.
