What an SSCC identifies
An SSCC uniquely labels a shipping container so it can be tracked through the supply chain. It answers ‘which pallet is this?’, whereas a UPC answers ‘which product is this?’.
Each pallet or carton gets its own SSCC, used on the shipping label alongside an ASN (advance shipping notice).
Who actually needs one
Mainly sellers shipping in bulk to large retailers or distribution centers that require GS1 logistics labels.
If you sell individual units online, you do not need an SSCC — a product UPC/EAN is enough.
SSCC vs UPC vs ITF-14
